There’s nothing quite like enjoying a cold brew or some fresh seafood at a dockside tiki bar after a day of paddling. It’s even better when that spot is out in the boonies, away from civilization, and the waitstaff doesn’t care if you’re a little sweaty, if your butt is still wet, or if you’re a little crusty from sunscreen and saltwater.

What makes exploring this area particularly distinctive is the deep history that is woven into the landscape. When you are cycling Wildlife Drive and the surrounding roadways, paddling the refuge water trails, and walking the trails, you are exploring the very same scenery that Harriet Tubman traversed in her efforts to lead enslaved African Americans to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

Delmarva doesn’t exactly have any lengthy trails to do any serious, overnight backpacking trips. But if you’re looking for something with the same level of adventure, there are several kayak-camping opportunities across the peninsula.
